Processionals

Are there any special Celtic or Irish wedding processionals?

The answer is "yes" and "no." Bridal marches, as we know them, generally came down to us from classical music such as Mendelssohn's "Wedding March" first played in England in 1847 or Wagner's "Bridal Chorus." They both became popular around the same time.

There are many beautiful possible choices for this very important moment and here are some suggestions we've put together for your special day!

Historically, any march (of Irish, Scottish or Celtic) origin might be used for a Celtic/Irish wedding. My personal favorite is this old Irish march. We liked it so much we created and recorded five arrangements to suit many tastes.

One gorgeous melody - with five choices of arrangements to suit every personality and style of wedding, from simple to elaborate! Whether you like to hear Irish harp on its own, or with strings, oboe, Irish drum (bodhran), Irish whistle, the Irish pipes, or piano, our most popular "Celtic Wedding Processional" offers every possible choice. And, our sound samples make it easy to hear the difference before you make your selections.

We’ve included length of each track after each title for your convenience. We want to be sure you have enough music for each part.

1. Solo Harp (2:58) - very low key and simple.

1B. Solo Harp (2:00) - ditto

2. "Celtic Classical" (3:56) Harp, Strings & Oboe. If you like a slightly more classic sound, this is for you.

THE BIG ENTRANCE

3. "Highland Version" (3:56) Harp, Strings, & Irish Pipes. You either love them or hate them: the Irish pipes! And if you love them - this is the version for you...

4. "Highland Drum Version." The Bodhran or Irish drum is included in this version. (You may not hear the drum properly on your computer's speakers because they often obliterate the 'low end,' but you will hear it beautifully on decent speakers.)

5. "Piano-based Version."  This is from "The Vow, an Irish Wedding Celebration." It also features Irish pipes, Irish whistle and bodhran (Irish drum) and is very 'traditional Irish' sounding. (Again, you may not hear the drum on computer speakers.)

Choose a few selections for your wedding party processional, and save the remaining tracks for the Prelude. This enchanting music conjures the magic of the Irish landscape, and provides the perfect musical backdrop to your special day!

As you walk gently towards your future - may the road rise to meet you!

1. King of the Faeries 3:55 (Original Version)  (Ethereal, evocative, everyone's favorite). By far the most popular live processional after our "Celtic Wedding Processional" and most commonly used for Bridesmaids! It works beautifully out of doors, for bridesmaids, for children or for anyone wishing to create a 'magical' atmosphere.

2. The Grove 3:33  (Starts slowly, ethereal, atmospheric)

3. The Butterfly 5:19 (Think - "Celtic Vivaldi" - impressionistic, fey)

4. Dove's Return 3:00  (Another big favorite; popular for outdoor ceremonies, or during ceremonies, a very 'light' touch)

5. Greensleeves 3:16 (A "classic" on Irish whistle & harp, for a dreamy "float down the aisle" feel)

6. Spirits of the World 3:41 (iTunes Essential, New Age) "Float down the aisle" feel. This tune is listed under iTunes essentials with such luminaries as Enya, Jim Brickman, Acoustic Alchemy & Will Ackerman

7. Aisling (Dream) (3:17) (Very, very dreamy - Also used for interludes and even Meditation)

These next selections broaden your choices to include a song in Gaelic as well as a song for choir from Wales. Many of the tracks emphasize one particular instrument, so if you love Irish whistle, cello or fiddle/violin, you're in luck! There's even a melody from Scotland.

Because these selections draw upon the music and instrumentation of different Celtic countries, your guests will feel the full richness and variety of Celtic traditions. These choices are ideal for those peaceful moments during your service.  You can mix them in with more upbeat pieces from the other collections available here on our site to create a lovely soundtrack for your special day.

1. The Mermaid. (2:24)

2. My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose. (1:38) A beloved Scottish melody featuring the 'fiddle.' Its short length lends itself well to the lighting of the candles by the bride and groom or any brief ritual such as giving flowers to parents (roses maybe;) guardians and loved ones or pausing to remember those who are not present.

3. Blind Mary. (3:01) One of O'Carolan's most beautiful melodies. Played on harp with lush string accompaniment. Brides like this one!

4. Calon Lan. (3:01) Wales is renowned for its wonderful singers. This is one of their famous choral pieces in four-part harmony, which translates to "Shining Heart."

5. New Light. (2:45) Cello lovers will enjoy this lovely melody - it starts out peacefully and builds.

6. Marbha na Luinmeach (2:50) This beautiful free-form melody on the Irish whistle is from County Limerick.

7. A Story. (3:25) This original piece is ideal for peaceful moments.

Recessionals

We kick off here with Carolan's Concerto, our most popular recessional. What you don't use in your recessionals, you can use for the Reception and create an upbeat, happy mood to segue into the rest of your day! There's a "classic" feel to these selections that lovers of quality acoustic music will love - no classification required!

These selections have a stronger Irish flavor, so, if you like that more fun, upbeat sound, you'll want to check that out!

"Slainte is saol." (Irish Blessing) (Translation: Health and long life to you!) Learn how to pronounce this and view other Wedding Blessings.

1. Carolan's Concerto (4:04) Celtic meets Classical - by far our most popular recessional and it's clear why - it's absolutely ideal! Joyful but classy.

2. The Palatine's Daughter (2:39) Chamber orchestra - Celtic style

3. Irish Ode to Joy II  (1:58) Upbeat reel on the harp

4. Hunting the Wren  (3:08) Mid-tempo and playful

5. Fig for a Kiss (3:26) (VOCAL) Vocal in Gaelic

6. Carol of the Jezebel - (2:17) Harp & whistle, early-music feel with Bodhran (Irish drum) (this track is also in Processionals)

7. O'Carolan - (2:57) Celtic meets classical, ideal as a processional, recessional or postlude music. (this track is also in Processionals)

The next selections have a stronger Irish flavor, so if you like that more fun, upbeat sound, these might just be calling to you!

Would you like to skip back down the aisle to a distinctly Irish sound? Consisting of seven selections and sequenced to play as a postlude also, we kick off with Haste to the Wedding, from The Quiet Man soundtrack. (We did promise you everything!) From the ridiculous to the sublime, we quickly return to true traditional style with a brilliant fiddle tune, the 'pure drop' that we've dubbed Irish Ode to Joy. And, the final track, Give Me Your Hand, rounds things out with a truly authentic Irish gathering tune of love, community and reconciliation.

However your tastes run - from fun to frivolous, from mad to trad - you're sure to find the right recessional here to express yourself! The processionals offer more "Classic Celtic" selections to choose from, if that's your preference. Working backwards, it can be a nice idea to start with something a little more serious and after a few minutes, graduate to a really fun, upbeat jig or reel. It's often a good idea to think of your postlude music in a 15-20 minute timeframe. This entire selection has been sequenced to run consecutively if that works for you.

Long Life and Happiness to you! More Irish Wedding Blessings here.

1. Haste to the Wedding (2:15) (Somewhat kitschy, but fun; "Quiet Man" style. Think John Wayne!)

2. The Gold Ring (4:07) (Very famous Irish jig with several variations - very happy and light)

3. Irish Ode to Joy I  (1:15) (Upbeat reel - fiddle & harp)

4. Burke's Jig Set (3:09) (Set of harp jigs - upbeat and light)

5. Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring (4:19) (Celtic style with some Jigs mixed in - fun! - not suitable for a processional)

6. Planxty Burke  (2:22) (A mid-tempo O'Carolan piece that's more on the traditional side)

7. Give Me Your Hand (3:03) (Irish Pipes - style of The Chieftains)

Dinner Music and all-occasion Background Music

Wedding planners recommend 90-140 songs for the reception alone. While your friends and family enjoy the wonderful hospitality that you've so lovingly prepared for them, be sure to create the perfect atmosphere for everyone to enjoy spending time together. Some of the best weddings are filled with music, lively conversation and the special moments that occur when people who know each other - or perhaps have only met for the first time - have a chance to talk, tell stories, and laugh while sharing the joy of your wedding day. Don't worry - there'll be lots of time to tear up the rug once you hit the dance floor! Your guests will thank you for the opportunity to connect before the music gets cranked and the serious dancing begins!

"THE VOW" CD ARRANGED FOR PIANO OR HARP & MELODY INSTRUMENT Each PDF file in this zip file is arranged for piano or harp & melody instrument (or voice).

Review by Rachel Avery, Madison Folk Harp Society

"The Vow sheet music book contains 13 arrangements from 'The Vow' album. This music is wonderful for either harp (piano) alone or harp (piano) with melody instrument.

Each tune starts off with a solo harp arrangement and then moves into a full harp accompaniment with the melody written as a separate line above.

The music in this collection ranges from 2 flats to 3 sharps. so a harp with full levers is recommended. The melody line is perfectly suited to violin, but can be played on flute or other melody instrument, perhaps taking the melody up an octave if needed. THE HARP PART CAN EASILY BE PLAYED ON THE PIANO TOO! The interplay between the harp and melody instrument is wonderful and adds complexity and richness to the sound. The music ranges from dreamy ballads to sprightly jigs, and is an excellent addition to the repertoire of any gigging harpist.

This (sheet) music is wonderful for either harp/piano alone or harp with melody instrument".
